Vocabulary
Chinese vocabulary is the foundation of understanding and communicating in Mandarin. Unlike alphabetic languages, Chinese is built on characters (汉字), each representing a syllable and often carrying its own meaning. Words can consist of a single character or combine two or more characters to form more precise meanings. For example, the character 学 (xué) means “to study,” while 学生 (xuéshēng) means “student.”
One key feature of Chinese vocabulary is its reliance on compounds. Many modern words are formed by combining simple characters, making it easier to infer meaning once the basic components are understood. Additionally, context plays a crucial role, as many characters and words can have multiple meanings depending on how they are used.
Vocabularies are divided into seven categories: HSK 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7-9.
